Talk abstract
How do babies and young children learn in everyday situations?
In the first part of my talk, I contrast core knowledge, core perception, and core principles-three viewpoints on how knowledge begins.
I situate these theories in the context of everyday learning and summarize empirical evidence that calls for a nuanced perspective of core principles. In the second part of my talk, I review different profiles of parental guidance and different cultural practices that provide equally effective support for infants and young children as they navigate challenging situations. The findings lead to a culture-first approach to studying early learning, in contrast to the outcome-first approach. I conclude with theoretical and practical implications of placing culture at the core of learning.
