Talk title: Reality-Based Imagination: The Development of Human and AI Minds

Talk abstract: Young children's imagination is often viewed as unconstrained and fantastical, yet developmental research suggests that it is deeply grounded in reality. Drawing on studies of pretend play, future thinking, causal reasoning, and problem solving, this talk will examine how children use imagination to simulate realistic possibilities based on their prior experience of the world. Paul Harris will discuss how this "reality-based imagination" supports learning, prediction, and innovation, and consider its broader implications for understanding human cognition and the development of AI systems.
